Stress...                                                              When stress is traumatic...

Picture
Despite its bad rap, stress is not always a bad thing. Stress helps us activate to solve problems, rise to the occasion to meet challenges, focus attention, and think more concretely. Some high stress professionals rely on stress to help them do their job.

Stress helps us learn (hence the often unpleasant aftermath of a stressful event in which we "replay" the incident), and highlights our goals and values, which helps bring meaning to our life.

When stress is critical...

A stressful  workplace event that overwhelms the coping strategies of employees is called a Critical Incident. Examples of critical incidents include: a life threat in the workplace, the death or serious injury of a  colleague, the suicide of a patient (or a coworker), gruesome or horrifying occurrences, sentinel events, officer involved shootings, the death of a child.

Typical signs of distress in those employees exposed to a critical incident may include:
  • Difficulty sleeping, nightmares
  • Shock, irritability, guilt, anger or depressed mood
  • Reluctance to return to work/desire to leave the profession
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Repeatedly reviewing the event in the imagination

Brief on-site individual or group interventions following a critical incident provide an opportunity for the employee and the organization. For the employee, discussing the incident and reactions in a structured way can "head off" unhelpful stress coping strategies, create room for new coping strategies and facilitate closure.  For the employer, interventions provide an opportunity to signal to employees that they are supported by the employer, thereby improving morale and facilitating timely return to work.

At times, for a variety of reasons, an individual may have difficulty recovering from a critical incident. Like a clog in the pipes, the thoughts, images and reactions to the critical incident do not dissolve.  At such a time, calling in the plumber is a wise thing to do!
We at CIStressConsultants consider ourselves like a plumber. We can meet individually with an employee, off-site, to discuss the event and the ongoing reaction and devise a plan to "clear out"  the incident. We can utilize specialized tools, including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Somatic Interventions, and CBT for PTSD.
Most health insurances are accepted for a diagnostic assessment and intervention. If after 2 weeks, reactions to a critical incident do not seem to be resolving, call 612-203-0379 to schedule an appointment.

When stress is cumulative...

Over a career, if highly stressful incidents are not processed they can accumulate and become a burden. The accumulation of incidents may lead to physical and/or emotional distress, job burnout, compassion fatigue or vicarious traumatization.  CIStressConsultants provides trainings, webinars,  group and individual assessment and program development to prevent or remediate these difficulties.
